Equity Perspective in Transportation Planning

Jandel Crutchfield, University of Texas at Arlington

Summary:

The “Equity Perspective in Transportation Planning” proposal is to develop a module/session that familiarizes students with the historical and structural processes that fuel unequal transportation access and mobility for communities today. It is also about developing students’ own ability to reflect on this history and its impact on their current and future work in transportation planning and the future mobility of individuals and communities in society. In this module/class session students will be introduced to key equity concepts related to transportation planning, followed by an overview on the history of transportation planning and how structural inequities impacted communities within the United States and abroad. Students will also have the opportunity to test their own understanding of the impacts of structural inequities on their own communities. The linkage from the historical context to the present is one of the key takeaways of this proposed training. This training will be offered in 3 civil engineering courses with both undergraduate and graduate students.
