This project will employ a Mt. Mazama volcanic ash soil amendment to improve the surface stability and firmness of one quarter mile of the existing trail to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A southern Oregon-based company working at Mt. Mazama ash deposits near Chemult, Oregon will provide the ground pumice that serves as the primary pozzolan. A mix including 50% Portland cement and 50% ash will be used to create a binder that is applied as a slurry to the trail surface using a student-designed applicator prepared in the ENGR102 Introduction to Engineering II course. The goal of the project is to improve the surface characteristics to meet ADA requirements and attract greater use of the Wingwatchers Trail, a prized local amenity.
